Role Summary

The Tooling Apprentice position is designed to train and develop team members for Tool Maker opportunities at Cosma Casting Michigan. The apprentice participates in a Cosma Casting Michigan 4 year apprenticeship program, sanctioned by the US Dept. of Labor Bureau of Apprentice Training. The apprentice will achieve journeyman’s status after completing the 4 year Apprenticeship Training Program. Under the guidance of a qualified skilled tradesman, the Tooling Apprentice is responsible for assisting with and/or carrying out inspections, repairs, maintenance and modifications of machinery, equipment and facilities as part of their job training requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow and enforce all plant safety rules and policies
  • Maintain 3.0 GPA or higher to maintain program benefits and eligibility while attending the training curriculum which supports skills required for a Tool Maker
  • Adhere to all educational guidelines required for participation in the apprentice program and represent CCMi in a positive fashion at all times
  • Perform all assigned tasks during the On the Job (OJT) phase of training at CCMi to the best of your ability
  • Understand and promote Magna’s philosophies and Employee’s Charter
  • Adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental Programs
  • Attend classroom instruction as required
  • On-The-Job training under the close supervision and guidance of an experienced class “A” Die Specialist with all work subject to review
  • Provide support in troubleshooting/repairs and system improvements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and cost reduction activities
  • Maintain a clean orderly work area and support 5S initiatives
  • Complete all documentation as required including log book
  • Promote good housekeeping
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Strong mechanical inclination and above average problem solving skills
  • Excellent job performance reviews and attendance record
  • Able to work scheduled overtime
  • Able to work any shift/ flex shifts
  • Able to work flexible hours on short notice
  • Must have good communication skills
  • Provide own tools as required for classroom and OJT.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Technical procedures/blue prints. Work in co-operation with others.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 
  • Must have common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagraph form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.   
  • Must be able to understand written instructions


Education and Experience Required
High school diploma, GED, College or Technical Training School

Work Environment

Includes office and manufacturing plant
Must be able to perform all essential functions as appropriate on the plant floor, in meetings, and with employees of all departments, management, customers and suppliers 
Provide support for three shifts and weekend production schedule
Flexible hours and able to work additional hours as required
