HSE Manager

Summary of Responsibilities:

The HSE Manager is responsible for managing and ensuring that all safety and environmental standards are maintained within compliance of OSHA and EPA regulations, as well as Vehtek Systems Inc. and Magna policies.  Ensure that all training requirements, including on the job training, are met.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure Vehtek Systems, Inc. Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures are consistently applied based on the principles of the Magna Employee’s Charter, the Corporate and Divisional Health, Safety and Environmental Policy in compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations, including OSHA, EPA and IDNR
  • Provide counsel and support to Division management, Direct Leaders, and Associates on health, safety, and environmental matters
  • Ensure a safe work environment by coordinating all safety activities to reduce workplace accidents and protect associates
  • Plan and coordinate internal and external safety training and provide pre-shift meeting safety content
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination with all internal customers, plant management and associates; maintain positive employee relations; listen to issues and concerns and respond (C48) within 48 hours
  • Promote and practice “safety first” by immediately addressing any hazards, defective equipment or unsafe conditions within the department
  • Oversee and direct HSE associates in safe, quality-minded and productive manner with a sense of urgency to attain production priorities as scheduled
  • Establish written safety standards and annually update and review these policies and procedures
  • Evaluate safety and ergonomic issues in workstation design and layout and in the development stage of manufacturing processes and equipment
  • Provide, analyze, and maintain statistics in continuous improvement in the area of workplace safety and loss control
  • Review all accident/incident investigation reports and provide leadership in developing and implementing corrective actions
  • Coordinate the selection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and appropriate fit testing of such items
  • Conduct monthly safety and environmental audits and report results to division management
  • Coordinate meetings and provide necessary administrative support to Health, Safety and Environmental Committee
  • Ensure that the Health and Safety portions of the Action Plan resulting from the Employee Opinion Survey are completed in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a high profile with associates on the plant floor and be a strong advocate to ensure that associate safety and environmental concerns and issues are resolved in a timely manner
  • Monitor new and amended legislation and remain current with the latest health, safety and environmental requirements
  • Keep safety boards updated throughout facility and post minutes of Health, Safety and Environmental Committee meetings
  • Implement, maintain and report on status of the Environmental Management System per ISO-14001 requirements
  • Maintain statistical information on waste streams
  • Coordinate recycling program and spill control team
  • Monitor Material Safety Date Sheets (SDS) and ensure they are updated
  • Investigate ways to reduce waste and environmental liability
  • Coordinate and conduct sampling, transportation and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams in compliance with environmental regulations
  • Maintain employee documentation
  • Promote and facilitate Open Door process without reprisal, effective communication and Fair Treatment
  • Advise Team Members of any potential hazards and/or provide written instructions as to the measures to protect the Team Member
  • Conduct monthly safety inspections and implement corrective actions
  • Correct unsafe acts or conditions
  • Correct or commends health & safety performance

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Post secondary education in safety engineering or equivalent experience in an industrial environment
  • 5 years experience in health, safety and environmental field, in a manufacturing environment
  • 2 years experience in a training capacity
  • 2 years experience in a management or leadership capacity
  • Excellent Verbal and Written Communication Skills
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, etc)
  • Good mathematical, analytical and organizational skills
  • Experience in managing departmental and operational budgets
  • Sound knowledge of OSHA regulations, Workers’ Compensation, and other related legislation
  • Maintains the following active training and certifications:
    • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Hazmat
    • First Aid and CPR
    • Respirator
    • Fire Extinguisher
    • Ergonomics
    • Spill Control
    • QS-9000
    • ISO-14001
Additional Information
  • Manufacturing plant floor, characterized by temperature extremes, loud noise and considerable tow motor traffic
  • The individual must be able to perform all essential functions as appropriate on the plant floor, in meetings, and with team members, leadership, customers and suppliers
  • Must be able to attend planning and training meetings as required
  • Able to work in various locations within and outside the plant
  • Must be able to perform work in an office environment
