Role Summary

This position reports directly to the Assembly Manager and is responsible for the general and specific job duties as described below.

Key Responsibilities

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  • As Decostar’s subject matter expert for lean manufacturing, the Industrial Engineer will seek out optimization projects independently and as directed by senior management.
  • Maintain and update Decostar Secondary Tooling Standard and submit RFQ to supplier for quoting of new and existing programs. Work with purchasing for final sourcing and negotiations of secondary equipment suppliers.
  • Maintain Secondary Tooling program costs within budget. Prepare and issue complete request for quote packages to potential suppliers, and complete a competitive analysis. Use Decostar Secondary Tooling Manual along with engineering drawings and math data as a guidelines for quotes.
  • Analyze capacity plans, by program, conduct line balancing and plant/equipment layout.
  • Support development for new Decostar’s programs, capital projects and new equipment acquisition.
  • Work with the Program Managers/Launch Manager and/or Product Engineers to provide input on industrial direction for all secondary and assembly processes.
  • Provide updated costs and timing as required for all changes for assigned programs. When release, follow-up and ensure changes are implemented correctly and on budget.
  • Work with suppliers as assigned.
  • Conduct various Kaizen events and workshops to optimize and improve existing manufacturing operations.
  • Insure product equipment is designated, sourced and delivered to meet product, customer and program timing constraints.
  • Identify new metrics for judging efficiency, as well as work with training coaches to develop curriculum to bring hires to peak efficiency quickly.
  • Creating process documentation (S.O.P., OPL, WI, and Training Records) and templates.
  • Provide any assistance to production needs including the training of production team members during start-up phases as required.
  • Revise assembly/punching/welding Machines processes for new programs.
  • Producing reports and Action Plan utilizing Lean principals including Visual Management, Work Cells Design, Kaizen, Kanban, 5S, Value Streams Maps, Ishikawa, SMED, One Point Lesson, and SIPOC, to improve productivity, increase process efficiencies, and reduce costs.
  • Support the Decostar suggestion program (VOICE) in a manner that fosters and encourages 100% participation by all Decostar employees.
  • Develop working relationships with all shop floor personnel that provides shop floor personnel with an easy means to discuss their responsibilities and ways to improve Decostar’s manufacturing operations. 
  • Evaluate, communicate and assist in implementing improvement ideas as well as communicating why ideas were not acted upon.
  • Create and maintain a plan that will allow Decostar to actively submit and participate in the Magna Winning Teams program.
  • Understand business accounting practices and utilize real-time financial information when determining savings, investment costs, labor efficiencies or other projects.
  • Create and maintain a schedule for regularly scheduled visits to satellites to perform operational evaluations and follow-up to close any improvement ideas generated from said visits.
  • Working weekends, and Travel as required from time to time by the business needs.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Education/Skills/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and five (5) or more years of related business experience required.
  • Certified Six Sigma Black Belt preferred
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written. 
  • Training in Lean manufacturing principles and Kaizen facilitation. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft word, excel and project.
  • Training on AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and encourage groups to effective results.
  • Must have good problem solving skills and excellent analytical and statistical skills.
  • Must have good computer skills to include; Microsoft Word, Excel, & Lotus SmartSuite.
  • Must have good math skills.  Must have good SPC skills.
  • Must have a positive “can do” attitude and be a self-starter.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple priorities and have a high tolerance for stressful situations.
  • Must have the ability to read automotive blueprints and engineering specifications.
