Role Summary

The EDM Machinist Programmer determines program requirements based on design and engineering requirements, ensures that sink/wire EDM machine is in working condition and properly calibrated, sets up and operates precision machinery as needed and writes or edits programs for sink/wire EDM machine.

Key Responsibilities
  • Main point of contact EDM Team Leader
  • Ability to perform prescribed duties and responsibilities outlined in all levels and categories
  • Adhere to applicable quality systems and Support the total Tycos Management System (MAFACT, WCM, ISO-9001)
  • Adhere to and promote the Magna Employee Charter; work within the rules, regulations and guidelines of the Tycos Employee Handbook and follow all Tycos instructions, policies and procedures
  • Must be proficient in the ability to design electrodes in CAD system
  • Must be proficient in the ability to machine electrodes.
    • Ability to organize multiple jobs at once.
    • Ability to program electrodes using CAM system.
    • Ability to operate machining center required in the manufacturing of electrodes.
  • Must be proficient in the ability to hand work electrodes.
  • Must be proficient in EDM Machine Operation:
    • Ability to setup, pickup, program and run EDM machines as per departmental goals.
    • Ability to view files and insert electrodes into files
  • Perform to quality standards defined by department
  • Maintain machine runtimes as per departmental goals.
  • Must be able to effectively work from home to feed programs to the cell to keep machines running during off shift hours.
  • Perform and record all required geometry checks at designated intervals
  • Must ensure the use and proper documentation of the “Quality check sheet”.
  • Must be able and willing to train all aspects of electrode design/ designing principles, graphite CAM programming/ programming principles, graphite machining/ machining principles, graphite hand work/ handwork principles and EDM machine operation and operating principles to ensure smooth transitions and promote a stronger overall department.
  • Must be able to initiate, participate and educate others in standardized work processes, 5S initiatives and help create work instructions based on them and everything else learned to date.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to notice abnormal conditions in processes and effectively solve the issues.
  • Must be able to read, react and make recommendations on work in the scheduling system.
  • Must be available and willing to travel as required for training, benchmarking, etc.
  • Can work alone on various shifts with minimum supervision.
  • Participate in and support Continuous Improvement and WCM initiatives
  • Maintain work area in accordance with the principles of 5S and operate daily within these standards; Ensure work area is kept neat and organized
  • Perform all job functions in a safe and healthful manner, abide by all health, safety and environmental rules and regulations, promote safety in the workplace
  • Report all accidents/incidents and unsafe conditions/behavior
  • Participate in accident/incident investigation process
  • Review and recommend changes to the production schedule in a team capacity where required
Key Qualifications/Requirements


  • College diploma / University degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience an asset


  • Experience as a EDM Machinist level 2 an asset


  • A strong working knowledge of CAM software is required
  • A strong working knowledge of CAD software is required
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze NTF related issues and correct for future circumstances
  • A proficiency in the use of:
  • Electrode design/ designing principles,
  • Graphite CAM programming/ programming principles,
  • Graphite machining/ machining principles,
  • Graphite hand work/ handwork principles
  • EDM machine operation and operating principles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to effectively problem solve.
  • Must possess and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills.
