Role Summary

Under general direction of supervisor, provides technical support to enable the Maintenance & Equipment Engineering Department to independently carry out daily responsibilities and integrate all phases of electronic / automated equipment installation, updates, and repairs.  Participates in continuous improvement processes and general upgrading of equipment and maintains equipment documentation as necessary.  Solves mechanical problems and gives direction for proper repairs.  Assigns tasks and trains other staff as needed.  Performs other duties as necessary in support of the Maintenance Department.  Works independently on assigned projects that range from simple program modifications to major redesigns that may have a mechanical, hydraulic,  pneumatic, or electronic scope involving senior/advanced level work beyond scope of Machine Repairperson and Maintenance Electrician.  Work may involve irregular work schedules and exposure to chemicals, high voltage from electrostatic equipment, loud noise, and hazardous waste.  

Provides technical support to production personnel in all phases of manufacturing.  Participates in continuous improvement activities to reduce cycle time/down-time due to set-up, change-over, processes, and/or tooling.  Troubleshoots, identifies, and implements equipment/process needs/improvements in work cell layout, process flow, work standards, etc.  Minimizes machine downtime affiliated with tooling, set-up, and/or processes.  Conducts manufacturing process tests.  Develops work standards for current tools, machines and equipment and maintains accurate records.  Provides training/work direction to other staff.
 

Key Responsibilities

1.    Work is complex and difficult in character and requires strong technical and broad business knowledge.  Requires independent problem solving and decision making with general direction given on project objectives and broad guidance from corporate strategy and goals.  Exercises considerable latitude in determining specific project objectives and approaches to assignment.  Decisions often involve substantial impact and risk to the organization with potential for long-lasting results.  
    
2.    Provides technical support by monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing all complex electrical, hydraulic, electro-mechanical, automated systems, and robotics systems.  Coordinates efforts and implements proper processes and procedures to resolve problems.  Updates equipment, solves mechanical problems, and gives direction for proper repairs in support of Maintenance Department.

3.    Provides support for new equipment launches and retrofits of existing production work cells. Note: the scope of work will involve PLC programming (modifying existing programs as well as creating new programs), modifying and creating HMI applications, vision system set up and programming, robot path program modifications and the associated documentation.

4.    Contributes to Maintenance & Equipment Engineering Department objectives.  Reviews engineering specifications and designs of new equipment and/or redesign of existing equipment.  This includes safety requirements, electrical codes, and standardization of components, cost-effective design, and maintainability of equipment.  Maintains machine, mechanical, and/or equipment documents as necessary.    
    
5.    Participates in continuous improvement processes.  May work on projects involving new product launches, cost reduction, up-time improvement, or evaluation of new equipment, etc.  Establishes new preventative maintenance procedures and periodically audits/updates existing procedures.
    
6.    Assigns tasks and trains production and/or maintenance staff.  Assists Maintenance Manager, Equipment Engineering Manager and Team Leaders in evaluating employee skills and recommends additional training as needed.  Reviews potential training programs and conducts on-the-job training sessions for the Company.    
    
7.    Performs other duties as necessary in support of Maintenance & Equipment Engineering Department, such as supporting weekly and weekend production support, PM’s (Preventative Maintenance) and work orders.  Works independently on assigned projects that range from simple program modifications to major redesigns that may have a mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic scope.  

8.    Performs all work in compliance with Magna and Magna Sealing and Glass Systems Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures as well as all federal, State and local laws; promptly reports any hazardous condition or workplace injury to immediate supervisor or EHS designate.

9. Analyzes, troubleshoots and improves manufacturing processes.

10. Develops and revises processes for new programs.

11. Analyzes defects. Assists in solving quality issues.

12. Prepares summarizing defects.

13. Monitors machinery and equipment for safety and cleanliness.

14. Responsible for end-of-arm tooling set up, trouble shooting and continuous improvement.

15. Preforms start up and shut down of machines and assures that all sub-systems (water, dryers, heaters, robots, computers) are operational.

16. Responsible for minimizing downtime related to die changes and process set-up.

17. Ensure parts and supplies are available to preform job duties.

18. Responsible to ensure that process is producing parts that meet quality standards. Adjusts processes to provide continuous quality production.

19. Responds swiftly to issues or concerns raised by production team or Focused Factory leadership.

20. Correctly documents process adjustments.

21. Troubleshoots operating difficulties.

22. Properly handles and disposes.

23. Participate in cleaning and preventative maintenance jobs as assigned or necessary.

24. Participates in problem solving and continuous improvement activities.

25. Other duties as assigned.
 

Key Qualifications/Requirements

1.    Associate’s degree in a technical discipline plus significant amount of related work experience; or completion of apprenticeship as mechanic or electrician (i.e. journeyman card) and five years experience which includes advanced electronics/programming; or equivalent.    
    
2.    Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, update, and work on all equipment in designated area of responsibility.  Must have current knowledge of electrical codes and electricity and be able to apply it to the job.  Machine rebuilding and mechanical knowledge including hydraulics required.  
    
3.    Computer Aided Design skills required to create, update, read, understand, and work using mechanical, machine, and/or equipment documents.
    
4.    Ability to use and program personal computers and programmable machine controls with demonstrated knowledge of existing/new machine programming languages.   
    
5.    Demonstrated good interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills to communicate with internal and external contacts and work in a team environment.  Must be able to lead, train, and support other staff.
    
6.    Strong project management skills to work on projects independently under minimal work direction.

8.    Complete training to Work Instructions in the latest Sealing & Glass Systems format
