Position Overview:

Magna Corporate R&D in Troy, MI is seeking a talented and self-motivated Test Engineer for the development and testing lab in Holly, MI to be a part of the Advanced Robotics Group, which creates new automation solutions that improve overall efficiencies using advanced robotic technologies. The ideal candidate will have a deep experience in creating and executing validation test processes for functional and reliability evaluation of complex robotic systems. The candidate will also have theoretical and practical experience in industrial robotic manipulators, machine vision, and PLCs. The ideal candidate will be working in a culture that fosters creativity and problem solving. This position will play a key part in the Advanced Robotics Group, and be a part of a tightly knit development team that creates advanced manufacturing solutions for the future.   



  • Understand system requirement, work with the team to establish and validate the operational windows, design experiments, and define test plans.
  • Design, setup and realize the test systems, including, but not limited to, acquiring appropriate hardware (e.g. fixtures, sensors, actuators), interfacing electrical or computer systems (e.g. data acquisition systems), and writing interface software (e.g. software driver, GUI).
  • Execute test plans, collect test data, perform data analysis, and report and present the results.
  • Evaluate and identify improvements to validation process on systems integration of existing robotic systems (such as serial manipulator arms).
  • Develop and maintain high level of communications with cross-functional team and partners, including internal and external (academic) teams.
  • Assist root cause analysis and corrective action for software components and products, and warranty issues.
  • Attend functional training and technical conferences to learn new tools and methodologies and keep up to date on market and technical trends.
  • Practice and maintain integrity while following Magna’s Charter and Constitution.

Health & Safety and housekeeping responsibilities:

  • Involved in accident / incident investigation progress.
  • Corrects unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Corrects and commends Health & Safety performance.
  • Responsible for general upkeep and required maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Responsible for adherence of lab to Magna requirements (ie. Mafact / 5S) and procedures.
  • Attend subject related conferences and technical talks.



  • Creative and self-motivated with the ability to understand and divide a vision into prioritized tasks.
  • Strong experience in validation and test of robotics systems.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
  • Provide the customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions.
  • Ability to work on challenging assignments with aggressive schedules.
  • Experience in hardware and software system integration, such as integration of new sensors, actuators and/or robotic manipulator into a new or existing test system.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on field experience in industrial automation and robotics.
  • Experience in data collection and statistical data analysis.
  • Experience in GD&T.
  • Experience in requirements gathering and writing specifications as they relate to test functionality.



  • BS/MS in electrical, mechanical or equivalent engineering discipline with appropriate coursework focus


Special Knowledge / Skills:

  • English: Fluent in written and verbal communication.
  • Control logic programming and ladder logic with at least one PLC OEM (AB/Yaskawa/Siemens).
  • Robot programming and offline simulation experience with a few OEMs:  ABB, Motoman, Fanuc.
  • Machine vision – Cognex, Halcon or similar and basic understanding of optics (camera and lens selection for a given task). Understanding of 3D-vision systems and technologies such as laser triangulation, active stereo, and point-cloud processing.
  • Understanding of safety systems.
  • Communication protocols (EIP, TCP/IP, modbus, IO-Link), DI/Os, sensors and actuators.
  • Ability to read and make electrical schematics, and engineering drawings.
  • Programming experience: .NET, C++, python or similar.
  • Proficient in Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).


Physical Demands / Work Environment:                   

  • Readiness to travel international & domestic up to 15% annually.
  • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time in an industrial lab environment.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computer components.
