Key Responsibilities


  • Develop CAD of concepts for new RFQs to be submitted to customers.
  • Work closely with the RFQ Engineer, Sales Team, Buyers, TIEs, and Optics Team to develop and implement solid design concepts to meet the requirements defined in customer contract.
  • Focus on the Proof of Concept planning with the RFQ Engineer, to understand and limit the risk of design solutions with respect to part performance and manufacturability.
  • Ensure the CAD deliverables are progressing along the expected timeline, and propose action plans should problems arise.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Control during the RFQ process as a main point of contact for design and geometric related issues.
  • Determine and communicate dimensional measurement plans to ensure molded parts meet design intent.
  • Provide proof of concept activity for quoting activities.
  • Perform benchmarking activities to help increase our knowledge of optical, mechanical and electrical strategies being utilized by competitors.
  • Work with TIEs to develop new practices based upon the benchmarking activities performed.
  • When possible (pending work load), can aid the Applications CAD Team in developing lamps for production.
  • Should be able to perform as an Applications Designer and can do the following:
  • Develop concepts through to production, to ensure robust, cost sensitive design solutions.
  • Work with the Senior Designer to develop and implement solid design concepts to meet the requirements defined in customer contract.
  • Perform Lamp Level or Component Level packaging studies, balancing physical space limitations.
  • Define CAD files which communicate design intent from a singular component to a multi-component assembly.
  • Create and define robust, computer aided design files, consistent with Autosystems Standards, capable of enduring multiple design revisions quickly and efficiently.
  • Support data translation at the request of our Supply base to facilitate tool builds and concurrent design activity in CAD packages, other than that used by Autosystems.
  • Determine and communicate dimensional measurement plans to ensure molded parts meet design intent.
  • Create 2D drawings (customer, component, compliance).
  • Assist Senior Designer in updating design checklist.
Key Qualifications/Requirements


  • Two or three years post-secondary school (university or Community college) (Engineering Field) or Associates in CAD
  • 5 years experience
  • 2 years lighting experience desired
  • Solid control of Parametric Free Form Surface and Solid modeling in 1-2 CAD packages such as Unigraphics/NX, IDEAS or Catia.
  • Knowledge of standard plastics geometries to ensure manufacturing controls (i.e.: Draft, Wall stock, Rads and Fillets) are incorporated.
  • Perform translation of data utilizing industry standard translation software as required
Personal Attributes



  • Effective communication (written and verbal) with various departments within Autosystems.
  • Ability to effectively follow written and verbal direction on tasks to completion.
  • Experience in Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated understanding of Standard Drafting Practices and the ability to interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Basic understanding of Autosystems manufacturing processes and techniques, such as Injection Molding, Coating systems, and Assembly techniques currently in use.
  • Mathematical Skills: Aptitude for working with numbers with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Reasoning Ability: Effective trouble shooting for a variety of different situations/issues effectively.
  • Understanding of automotive lighting design principles
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Concept engineering
  • Review and analysis of data from capability studies


Physical Demands – Normal amount of sitting and standing; Ability to move around an office environment and on the production floor; Ability to work at a computer workstation; Ability to bend, twist, lift, reach. Required to carry out job duties and responsibilities in a work environment that may include, but is not limited to, varying levels of noise and/or temperature. Ability to lift max. 50lbs periodically.
