Key Responsibilities


  • Responsible to lead research, design and develop of physical electrical hardware for new designs in compliance with automotive standards and customer specifications from concept development to production launch
  • Works with Product Development team to insure best practices and lessons learned are being followed
  • Works with Manufacturing engineers to establish lamp level and component level DFM requirements
  • Works with Purchasing and Sales on new program content for costing
  • Responsible for coordinating proof of concept testing with electrical techs
  • Responsible for coordinating electrical environmental testing as required by the OEMs with electrical techs
  • Develops SOR for establishing manufacturing requirements for component level electronics assemblies
  • Develops Design best practices for Electronic assemblies and applies to active programs
  • Develops and maintains a lessons Learn database and insures read across for all programs
  • Align Design Strategies with New Technology and VA/VE initiatives which are in process
  • Provide on-going feedback to PE and EE as it relates to performance against expectations
  • Supports critical design reviews. Align product designs with manufacturing capabilities and escalate if alignment to Customer expectations is not present
  • Gain Operational input on designs at key milestones (prior to supplier kick off)
  • Utilizes knowledge of current procedures, regulations, customer and industry requirements and best practices to successfully create or assist in defining product and test specifications in order to obtain, operational cost, timing, safety, reliability, quality and manufacturing feasibility
  • Consults with engineering personnel/management to provide recommendations for the improvements of existing products and processes
  • Keeps aware and understands leading and new technology and manufacturing techniques that feed into Magna designs and best practices
Key Qualifications/Requirements


  • Technical background with an Electrical Engineering Degree, Advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years in an Automotive / Automotive Supply Base Engineering environment with progressive advancement in terms of knowledge and responsibilities
  • Extensive knowledge of Electronic Manufacturing processes, with 3-5 years direct work experience required
  • Experience in an Integrated Product Development Team
  • Keen familiarity with various Design Programs (Catia, CAD, UG, etc.)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Optics and Optics applications as it relates to Automotive Lighting
  • Knowledge and understanding of Electronics and LED light sources as it relates to Automotive Lighting.
  • Knowledge of Problem Solving methods (Red X, Six Sigma, 8D, etc.)
  • Full understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Experience with product validation focusing on mechanical, environmental and electrical testing
  • Knowledge of thermal design techniques
  • Knowledge and execution experience as it relates Test requirements and customer SOR's
  • Knowledge and execution experience as it relates to APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and Control Plans linked back to Design

  • Strong and varied interpersonal skills - able to communicate and negotiate with supplier and customer representatives verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and understand PCB layout (Altium or similar experience for PCB layout and review)
  • Able to gain support and co-operation of team members both internal and external
  • Works independently or in a team
  • Understands product manufacturing and costing processes
  • Computer literate including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Project
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in analytical toosl MathCad and Ansys Suite Minitab and other simulation tools
  • Review and Analysis of data from capability studies
  • Ability to statistically analyze data
  • Product dimensioning and tolerance analysis
  • Ability to problem solve effectively


Physical Demands – Normal amount of sitting and standing; Ability to move around an office environment and on the production floor; Ability to work at a computer workstation; Ability to bend, twist, lift, reach. Required to carry out job duties and responsibilities in a work environment that may include, but is not limited to, varying levels of noise and/or temperature. Ability to lift max. 50lbs periodically.
