Role Summary

Directs the activities of multiple Magna Lighting engineering program teams, both design and customer interface, (local and global) to secure future business awards within the platforms through strong customer interaction, through understanding of customer platform direction, participation in internal business case analysis and strong technical business presentation on core products. Ensure the successful, timely and cost-effective introduction of new or modified products into customer programs within defined division objectives having strong participation in the division PDP and design review process. Participates in internal strategic customer and product planning for future business cycles, and collaborates with the lighting leadership team on all strategic planning initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  •  
  • Identify the need for and marketability of new products and changes to existing products; interface with Strategic and Business Development and external partners on the development of a robust long term product road map.
  • Recruit staff, manage and coach employees for professional development, continuous improvement, and advancement, including performance reviews, routine coaching, and recommending appropriate training
  • Continually monitor the global engineering organizational structure to optimize costs and efficient, and where possible develop formal and informal partnerships with electronics, lighting, and technology organizations to execute the product development strategy\
  • Plan and execute a plan to develop effective and efficient engineering systems using information technology.
  • Establish a strong working relationship with customer platform contacts to ensure open dialogue on current programs and for the award of future program content. An extremely high level of customer satisfaction must be maintained
  • Develop budgets for engineering programs and determines and approves staffing levels required to support assigned function, provides for regular monitoring of performance against budget, manages budgets, and builds business plans
  • Develops engineering VAVE priorities and ensures timely and efficient execution of design VAVE projects.
  • Develop a global validation strategy to ensure cost effective product development test systems.
  • Ensures the various engineering program teams have well defined product targets/expectations for their programs, actively follow and comply with both the timing and expectation of the PDP process and are successfully resolving open program issues in a timely manner
  • Approves expenditure of engineering time and funds on programs in accordance with the business plan
  • Monitor engineering change notices. Ensuring the cost effectiveness, quality, adherence to government standards, and reliability of products designed through the design review process, and PDP process
  • Monitors and resolves product quality issues indicated by the customer, engineering, manufacturing, and sales
  • Directs the coordination of department activities with those of other engineering, program management, sales, plant and related departments
  • Maintains affiliations and represents the company in appropriate professional, technical and education groups
  • May represent the company as an expert witness in lawsuits
  • Follows Magna’s Code of Conduct & Ethics and related compliance policies
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications & Skills

  • B.Sc. & M.Sc. degree in Engineering, MBA desirable
  • 15+ years’ experience in product design, analysis, testing and supervision
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in an automotive leadership role
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in an automotive lighting leadership role
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal
  • P.E. Registration preferred
  • Excellent Time/ Resource Planning skills; good Technical Presentation skills preferred
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills

Working Conditions

  • Works in a comfortable environment either inside or outside in typically pleasant conditions.  Typical conditions are such that no risk of any injury or harmful effect is likely.
