Job Introduction

The role Sr. Research SW Engineer must plan, execute and coordinate the evaluation of cutting edge SW technologies used in embedded and/or cloud environments with internal and external R&D departments, (supplier) companies, institutions and academia. The evaluation will consist of a scientific deep dive, application analysis, market and cost factors associated with the technology.

Major Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of new SW technologies with compliance to scientific principles, engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements and related specifications
  • SW Architecture pattern definition based on new SW technologies to be integrated into the Magna portfolio – align overall fit to SW architecture of new technologies
  • Support the definition of SW related BB and there architecture with respect to modularity and scalability
  • Support strong SW related fields e.g AI with the appropriate SW language or technology (e.g. OpenVX, Apache TVM) to make SW BB independent from the HW
  • Ensure integration of new SW technologies to ensure an effective use of HW regarding safety, security, memory and performance (e.g. Rust)
  • Define blue prints / templates for the use of new SW technologies to be implemented in existing frameworks
  • Execute PoTs in the area of new SW technologies/stacks (e.g Zenoh, Mimik, ..)
  • Ensure alignment with GIT to develop and deploy new SW technologies (e.g PXE – diskless boot)
  • Design and conduct research programs, applying theory and principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, electronics, heat transfer and materials
  • Support project and program investigations of technologies and companies
  • Provide technical input into proof-of-concept studies for various technologies
  • Evaluate advanced technologies, products and processes, including but not limited to: competitive landscape, intellectual property status, technical feasibility, financial feasibility and manufacturability
  • Support the development of methodology for advanced strategy development for future technologies and products based on trend analysis and business strategy
  • Deliver vehicle-based R&D solutions to exploit Magna portfolio with selected OEM’s as directed
  • Contribute to team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes and by sharing new information with other team members
  • Support the ideation process while identifying gaps in the current product or manufacturing technology to guide and provide future R&D efforts
  • Maintain innovation project schedule by monitoring project progress, co-coordinate activities, calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements, and resolving problems
  • Specify requests and coordinate all sub-contracted work (i.e., S/W development, prototyping, validation, testing) and assures timely completion
  • Maintain proper filing systems to ensure all information, (electronic or hard copy), are stored according to departments requirements
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks
  • Responsible for keeping the organization abreast of developments in his/her R&D programs.
  • Interpret technical specifications from OEMS
  • Prepare project progress reports
  • Use related computer software and equipment to perform technical analysis tasks
  • Continuing education and/or training is critical as technology evolves
  • Perform other duties as required

Knowledge and Education

  • Master's or higher degree in Engineering including but not limited to: Computer Science, Electrical, Aerospace, and Robotics. Automotive OEM or Tier-1 experience preferred.
  • Proficient in programming in C/C++, Matlab/Simulink, Python, Rust, etc. 
  • Proficient in automotive operating systems including Autosar, Linux/ROS2, POSIX …
  • Deep knowledge in communication protocols (CAN, LIN, BT, TCP/IP, …)

Work Experience

  • 5 years or more experience including Ph.D. research, Automotive OEM, Tier-1 or industrial development.
  • Experience in embedded software development in a technology area related to mobility, robotics, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Experience in virtualization and containerization (e.g. WebAssembly) technologies

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong spoken and written English language skills.
  • Technical prowess to identify emerging technologies of potential relevance to Magna both within and outside the automotive sector

Work Environment

  • Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to travel domestic and international

Additional Information

The annual remuneration package for this position is a minimum of EUR 56,000 - with corresponding qualification. We offer attractive benefits (e.g., employee profit participation program) and a salary which is in line with market conditions depending on your skills and experience.
