Role Summary
Under the general direction of the maintenance manager, the assistant maintenance manager demonstrates model behavior and communicates openly and effectively with the team, driving the team to achieve the department goals. The assistant maintenance manager will provide technical expertise and leadership to all applicable areas of the division. The Assistant Maintenance Manager is responsible for achieving the goals and objectives of the maintenance department, and providing direct leadership to the facilities maintenance team, supervisors, controls engineers, weld engineers, robot engineers, maintenance planner, team leads, weld-techs, toolmakers, maintenance techs & apprentices. This position will have a direct impact on plant KPI’s and requires an accomplished yet dynamic skillset. They also assumes the role of department manager in the absence of the maintenance manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Complies with, supports and models MEVS operational procedures/policies, Employee Handbook, and Magna’s Employee’s Charter, Corporate Constitution, and operational Principles.
- Complies with relevant Quality and Environmental programs (e.g. TS16949, ISO14001).
- Complies with all Health and Safety programs in accordance with OSHA. Follows and ensures Company procedures regarding safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Work to achieve Company goals, objectives as communicated by divisional leadership.
- Provide technical expertise to division personnel to support existing and new customer programs.
- Lead all root cause investigations and implementation of countermeasures related to equipment availability and part quality
- Participate in APQP/CPMP processes relating to the design of weld assembly work cells and tooling, make recommendations as required.
- Evaluate processes/equipment and make continuous improvement recommendations to improve availability and overall throughput.
- Maintain department KPI’s and action plans regarding MTTR & MTBF to achieve department & plant goals.
- Maintain Top 3 Objectives with Area Supervisors to Optimize Production Throughput
- Develop and implement a training program for skilled trades and assigned personnel in robotic and hand; Projection, Spot and GMAW welding techniques and procedures and in the troubleshooting and repair of robotic and manual welding equipment.
- In conjunction with the maintenance planner, determine weekend work plan activities and ensure all necessary materials are available for work being performed.
- Recommend design changes to improve quality, reliability and productivity of welding equipment/process.
- Ensure time-cards and approvals are maintained and on-time in ADP.
- Participate in plant/company meetings, training, etc, as required
- Conducts themselves in a professional manner.
- Keeps work area clean and tidy.
- Other duties as required.

- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot equipment, processes, etc.

- Able to appreciate and maintain proper level of confidentiality, using discretion and tact.
- Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent math skills with the ability to apply to cost and analyze data.
- Computer skills in Microsoft office
- Must be able to interact effectively with other team members
- The assistant maintenance manager works in an office environment but may be exposed to some elements such as temperature and noise during time spent in the plant. Some of the physical demands of this position include sitting for prolonged periods of time, walking up and down staircases, occasional lifting, and occasional stooping and bending.
Additional Information
- Knowledge of AWS and RWMA standards
- Extensive knowledge of automotive welding (familiarity with; Fanuc, Bosch, Fronius, WTC, Lincoln, Tregaskis, Milco, DCMF) and fabrication processes (RSW, GMAW, GMAB, Projection welding)
- Familiar with Advanced Product Quality Planning methods
- Familiarity with Engineering and Quality practices and procedures including PPAP, blueprint reading, GD&T, use of measuring instruments, checking aids/fixtures, mechanical testing, etc.
- Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in an automotive manufacturing environment including welding and/or assembly.
- Experience/knowledge in robotic programming for welding processes (Fanuc programming an asset)
- Experience with PM planning and CMMS software (Funnel Cloud preferred)
