About the Role

The Optics Engineer is responsible for design & verification of the optical path for the Magna Electronics camera. This includes development of the design specifications of lenses, imagers, illumination, & filtration for automotive camera products. They will support mechanical and optics aspects of the product design and be responsible to build and test vision systems and conduct performance verification. They will be responsible for the optical component definition and selection and performance verification to the application requirements. The optical engineer might also test different lens and imager combinations to define gaps. Testing, tuning, and performance measurement of an optical path, as well as reporting errata are needed to understand enhancements required to a system function to meet requirements. They will be required to understand and learn from existing design. They will be required to work with local/global cross-functional teams, sub-suppliers as well as OEMs to understand the needs and provide deliverables according to the milestones.

Your Responsibilities

  • Development (design, implement, test and debug) of automotive camera optical paths
  • Provide technical input to development team to achieve successful outcome of system development, utilizing Magna procedures
  • Develop test methods, engineering reports, fixture/prototype designs and test execution support for product development
  • Perform design/debug investigations and support development, maintenance, failure analysis, and resolution activities
  • Solve technical issues associated with customer and product demand
  • Ability to understand newest technology in electronic imaging and conform to relevant ISO standards
  • Identify or propose product process or infrastructure improvements
  • Interface with product planning and sales team to provide technical design review material and RFQ feedback for their defined product
  • Travel to suppliers and customer sites to support in-vehicle demos and technical discussions
  • Develop and maintain all required documentation, such as block diagrams, BOMs, and test plans
  • Work with Product Assurance to develop concept and design validation test requirements and plans
  • Collaborate with layout engineers, mechanical engineers, validation engineers, software engineers, manufacturing engineers and other teams
  • Perform work assignments as a highly competent optics engineer, requiring independent design, implementation and testing of the optics components
  • Work assignments primarily involve intermediate through advanced level work, moving toward complete technical competency and mastery of the field

Who we are looking for

  • Degree in applied physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering or related fields
  • 4-8 years’ relevant experience regarding the responsibility/activities (listed above) in serial development
  • Optics experience required
  • Experience with specifying or designing lenses for vision camera. Experience with automotive camera lens design is a plus
  • Experience with testing & verification of imaging components such as lenses, illumination, & filtration
  • Knowledge of CMOS imager characteristics and applications. Experience with tuning CMOS camera performance by way of imager register settings is a plus
  • Familiar with imaging optics ISO standards such as ISO 15739, ISO 12233, etc.
  • Familiarity with non-visible light sensing/technologies
  • Experience with vision camera system level specification, design, and testing. Understanding of vision system design trade-offs and performance-cost balance
