Role Summary

Under the direction of the maintenance manager, the laser weld engineer is specific to ensuring that the engineered process and equipment is aligned to the production
requirements ensuring the least amount of machine downtime is achieved targeting an OA of 95%. The responsible candidate needs to champion; The laser path programming to achieve customer requirements, the fixture design and build, and the preventative maintenance of the equipment. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote & practice “safety first” policy by addressing all hazards, defective equipment & unsafe conditions immediately
  • Accident investigation, reporting & follow through of corrective action items for near miss & safety incidents
  • Ensure team member safety awareness through training, pre-shift meetings, & individual consultation; strive for continuous improvement in injury reduction
  • Follows & adheres to requirements of IATF 16949 & ISO14001 as required 
  • Maintain effective communication with team members via pre-shift & individual meetings regarding company policies, procedures, work rules, process documentation & environmental regulations
  • Schedule & assign team members to appropriate tasks to achieve department daily production, quality, 5S & housekeeping goals
  • Maintain an open & honest relationship with fellow team members & help develop this attitude; treat all team members with dignity & respect without favoritism 
  • Lead by example by wearing PPE at all times 
  • Follow the principles of the Magna Employee Charter 
  • Supports efforts to achieve department and plant goals on Employee Opinion Survey.
  • Promote & facilitate Open Door process without reprisal, effective communication & Fair Treatment

Key Qualifications/Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITIONS:

  • Update, modify, and continuously improve existing laser processing systems
  • Optimize the purchase, maintenance of spare parts
  • Train Technicians and Maintenance Personnel on how to properly operate and troubleshoot the laser processing processes 
  • Eliminate quality spills from lasers
  • Implement an effective work structure in the laser processing area
  • Plan, coordinate, follow up and implement APQP (Advance Product Quality Planning) activities for assigned programs
  • Establish and maintain budgets for assigned programs
  • Provide customer interface for assigned programs
  • Provide Program Engineering support for duration of program
  • Generate and implement Continuous Improvement projects
  • Do simulation studies for new and current projects
  • Housekeeping and other activities as assigned
  • Complete SPC (Statistical Process Control) charts as needed
  • Review all production objectives & coordinate objectives with production procedures in cooperation with department manager & other shift personnel to maximize product reliability & minimize costs
  • Supervision of team members to include training & development, communication & enforcement of company policies & procedures, performance coaching & evaluation, & written documentation of team member performance issues
  • Lead all team members to focus on zero defects
  • Uphold confidentiality & build trust within team
  • Acts as liaison with skilled trades regarding the condition of machinery/equipment, indicating need for repairs/service as detected/reported
  • Trouble shoot & obtain appropriate support to fix problems
  • Recommend measures for & participate in continual improvement of quality methods, equipment performance, product quality & lean manufacturing (optimize work, walk & wait)
  • React & follow through with all quality issues to ensure that no defective products are shipped to customers
  • Maintain effective communication & coordination with all internal customers, plant management & team members; maintain positive team member relations
  • Provide accurate daily reports on machine uptime, efficiency, pieces per hour, scrap percentage & accidents
  • Handle confidential information on a regular basis 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Solid mechanical aptitude 
  • Required to have a degree in an associated discipline specific to the function or that applicable to an Industrial electrician.
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of how job performance affects product quality & customer satisfaction
  • Able to work well with others; build & maintain positive team member relations
  • Able to prepare, read & interpret written reports, instructions, procedures & guidelines
  • Able to effectively present information & respond to questions from management, team members, suppliers & customers
  • Able to maintain confidentiality & use discretion & tact
  • Able to calculate figures & amounts, such as percentages & proportions 
  • Able to use computer & software as required
  • Able to work under pressure of meeting schedules, personnel issues, production deadlines & managing multiple priorities

Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Some of the physical demands of this position include sitting for prolonged periods of time, walking up and down staircases, occasional lifting, and occasional stooping and bending. Able to work flexible hours & overtime. 

 
EQUIPMENT / TOOLS USED:

  • Some of the equipment and tools used are computer, telephone, fax machine, copier/printer, and a projector. 

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Must have extensive knowledge and training in laser processing and equipment. 
  • Knowledge of departmental processes & procedures 

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience
  • An Electrical background and 5 axis machining or CNC or CMM background is required.

TECHNICAL TRAINING:  

  • Certified Electrical Technologist
  • Forklift training preferred 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years related experience and/or training
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands on technical experience – demonstrated in area of Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Tool & Die, Electrical Controls, Robotics, Assembly Engineering or Weld Engineering
  • Past leadership/supervision experience & training preferred
  • Quality control & SPC experience
