Objective and Scope

Objective:  Leads process development, production start-up, production support and the implementation of engineering changes and process improvements.  Ensures environmental aspects of production are considered.

Scope:  Leading process development for new programs. Continuous improvements for current production. Researching new technologies and implementing them. Documenting and training manufacturing team on new rolled processes.

Responsibilities, Duties and Authority

  1. Establishing  process flow and operations to make a part for new quotes.
  2. Work in a cross function team to complete PFMEA.  
  3. Establish specifications for new equipment and get quotes. 
  4. Roll out of equipment and processes to plant floor.
  5. Establish Standardized work, Job Element Sheets and other needed documentation to support equipment / process rollout.
  6. Main contact for planning/coordinating manufacturing projects.
  7. Investigate and research continuous improvement and development projects. If project is approved, lead to complete the project.
  8. Work with cross functional team to update and maintain plant layout drawings.
  9. Facilitates developing in process prints and production tools. This includes GD&T stack-up calculations, CAD updates for parts, fingers and new dies (process drawings, signoffs, checking prints).
  10. Provide technical assistance to sales and customers to influence product design and provide viable cost proposals and manufacturing processes to meet respective customer needs.  
  11. Keeps management team abreast of significant issues or developments identified during engineering activities and actions being taken to improve the situation.
  12. Maintains accurate files, records, studies and reports and shares the information appropriately.  Furnishes input on developing engineering standards and specifications.
  13. Benchmarking this would include benchmarking processes and parts at sister plants, Suppliers, Customers and competitors. 
  14. Assist the organization in implementation of MAFACT, including lean, standardized work and continuous improvement activities.
  15. Ensure that company policies and procedures are adhered to including IATF 2016:16949, ISO14001 (EMS), and Employee Handbook. 
  16. Participates in continuous improvement activities including driving CIP’s, submits improvement suggestions (CI, Safety).
  17. Manage multiple projects and deliverables while treating team members with dignity and respect and in accordance with the Magna Employee’s Charter and Common Values.
  18. Perform all work in a safe and healthful manner as outline in MIOSHA regulations and MPTSH safety and policies including proper use of Lockout/Tagout procedures.  Reports unsafe conditions to Manager/Supervisor within the department.
  19. Support and participate in division and department improvement initiatives through Continuous Improvement Suggestion Program, and sharing of knowledge, ideas, and/or best practices with co-workers.
  20. Actively participate and comply with all division and department policies, procedures and work instructions as they relate to your job.
  21. Provide training materials and new training for new processes. 

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from four-year college or university; or three to five years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have experience creating Manufacturing Process Prints, Standard Work Instructions and Job Element Sheets. Must have experience with CNC programming; Automotive Engineering; transmission component & machining (turning & grinding); laser welding; induction heat & cert; spline; cutting & rolling.  Familiarity working with various machining equipment including CNC lathe and mill.  Induction hardening preferred.  Working knowledge of G-code programming and operations.  Must be proficient with GD&T. Excellent organizational skills. Able to effectively communicate with customers, peers, management and plant personnel effectively (written and verbal). Required to be proactive and suggest improvements to existing processes policies and systems. Self-starter who is positive and professional. Ability to set priorities and multitask projects. Able to work hours required to comply with deadlines and to support corrective actions when they are needed. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Excellent attendance and satisfactory work performance record. Must be willing to further education to improve skillset as required.

Additional Skills

Language Skills: Requires extensive tact and communication skills (verbal and written) for direct customer communication.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Able to communicate in English effectively (both written and oral).

Mechanical / “Hands-on” skills: Must be comfortable with running and trouble-shooting machinery or has shown aptitude working on mechanical / electrical / pneumatic systems

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to create and interpret graphs.  Reasoning Skills:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to use problem solving when presented with problems or duties that do not have immediate answers or results.

Computer Skills:  To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient on the computer, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Project Management software.  Prior experience utilizing AS400 Database software, AutoCAD and ability to create spreadsheets.

Communication SkillsAbility to use active listening and assertive communication when needed.  Ability to give positive and constructive feedback effectively.
