Chemist- Polyurethane

Role Summary

Perform duties in support of polyurethane flexible foam systems house: research and development, production batch-blending, process optimization, quality assurance validation, coordination of physical property testing, customer technical service and supply of polyol blends to foam molding operations (customers)

Key Responsibilities

• Formulate the polyol blends to meet desired product output and characteristics
• Collaborate/support Magna Seating Innovation group on new urethane developments
• Collaborate/support Magna Seating market research group to identify new business opportunities and client leads
• Test chemicals/alternative products, document sampling process and report findings preferably in a statistical manner
• Be part of a team to generate of cost savings and operational improvement ideas through interaction with the business area, engineering and manufacturing
• Assist Magna Foam Plants with Manufacturing support in the areas of Chemistry and Processes
• Verifies the implementation of solutions to the product, process, and quality system
• Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of any nonconformities relating to the product, process, and quality system
• Assist Magna in planning and quoting new business/products
• Adhere to budgeting expenses
• Interacts/supports all chemical suppliers for continuous improvement and development activities

Additional Information

• Some travel required (<10%)
• Adheres to company systems and policies (IATF16949, ISO 14001, 5S, Employee’s Charter, and Operational Principles)
• Ensures conformance to all established policies, procedures, and rules as defined by Health and Safety systems, in compliance with OSHA, and Magna Corporate
• Participates in health and safety workplace inspections, as required
• Safety, Sanitation, Security: maintain a clean, neat and orderly work area.  Conduct operations in a manner that promotes safety. Comply with OSHA and SDS Standards

Key Qualifications/Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge and expertise in polyurethane polymer chemistry highly desirable
• Experience in chemical batching/blending
• Preference will be given to individuals with experience in flexible polyurethane foam chemistry
• Thorough knowledge of polyurethane raw materials, constituents and pre-polymers
• Attention to detail with the proven ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, develop solutions and lead their implementation.
• Strong communication skills: verbal, written, and technical presentations.
• Proficient skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, project management and/or some data base applications
• Candidate must be able to work independently on a variety of tasks with minimal supervision
