Mission of the Position

 

The Director, Product Engineering leads, directs, and provides oversight for the engineering center and product engineering group at their site. They are accountable for the execution/implementation of customer application projects, internal engineering projects and site strategy.  This role will interface internally with Global engineering leadership and community, Business Units including Divisions, Sales and externally with Customers and Suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Actively supports the customer activities to win the defined top programs
  • Engineering ownership for customer application projects (CAPs).  Customer point of contact within engineering for Troy-led projects.
  • Project Execution of CAPs and CTPs (Core Technology Programs)
  • Serial & Plant/Division Production support including VAVE
  • Engineering Site financial responsibility
  • Site Resource Management for Engineering headcount and capital planning
  • BCC (Best Cost Country) and Engineering efficiency target achievement 
  • Provide Engineering resource to Global engineering activities
  • Provide leadership to Troy Product Engineering team to improve culture of maximum employee commitment, retention, & development (Leading by example).
  • Helps establish the duties and responsibilities for positions reporting directly to them and delegates to each, responsibility and authority, for the performance of their assigned functions.
  • Ensures that the Product Engineering Group is staffed with competent personnel in all positions and that their abilities are identified, developed, and utilized through pro-active personnel development.  Ensures talent development and succession planning is in place for all people leaders and key technical positions.
  • Leads team competency growth relating to new technologies including knowledge, products, processes, and systems.
  • Develop and execute the site strategy and Business Plan supporting the global engineering strategy and in line with Magna Powertrain’s strategy.

    •     Train new employees.
    •     Correct unsafe acts and conditions.
    •     Ensure use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    •     Assess employee safety performance as part of performance appraisal.
  • Create a positive work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional/technical knowledge.
  • Develop and maintain a responsive and cooperative working relationship with internal and external customers.
  • Treat everyone with dignity, trust and respect.

Requirements and Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering required. 
  • Masters’ degree, majoring in engineering, business or related preferred.
  • High level of analytical ability with engineering problems.
  • Keen knowledge of engineering theory and principles of design.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in various leadership roles across engineering with a combination of experience in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and/or Mechanical Engineering required. 5+ years of experience leading large teams. 
  • Powertrain-specific customer and market knowledge, traditional and electrified powertrain experience required.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes used for powertrain systems.
  • Experience with safety-relevant powertrain and control systems.
  • Proven ability to work in complex matrix organizations.
  • Ability to motivate and affect cultural change in large and diverse teams.
  • Understanding of financial models and methods used in manufacturing companies.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Strategic thinking and action.
  • Conflict Management and inter-cultural understanding.
  • Ability to drive discipline and accountability across large organizations.
  • Ability to travel domestic and international as required.

Work Environment

 

Office environment; frequent overseas and domestic travel. 

 

While working in this environment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes and various levels of temperature created by manufacturing processes.
