Position Summary

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the daily and ongoing operation of the Advanced Development and Innovation (ADI) Test Lab.  Major duties include technical and testing support for the organization’s R&D efforts in addition to process, material and testing support for the Divisions and outside customers. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide competent analysis/ solutions of divisions material and process problems in a timely manner
  • Review test procedures to ensure compliance with ISO/ASTM specifications, etc.
  • Act as the contact for external clients: to ensure ADI capabilities can support client’s needs
  • Prepare and approve quotes, reports, and billing to external customers
  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign laboratory tasks to meet agreed upon customer deadlines, due dates, etc.
  • Maintain the Quality System, Procedures and Forms
  • Review test reports for accuracy and content, perform tests when required.
  • Promote ADI’s laboratory services to acquire new projects to meet ADI revenue objectives
  • Prepare annual capital expenditure budgets (capex), follow capex submission/approval process and ensure capex spent per quarter
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity
  • Manage the department, providing employees with leadership, coaching, mentoring, training and performance management to ensure departmental effectiveness, safety and productivity
  • Report all accidents / incidents and unsafe conditions / behavior
  • Establish staffing levels within the department, ensuring all employees are appropriately selected, motivated and retained
  • Actively participate in Health and Safety meetings, accident / incident investigation process and formal / informal workplace inspections.
  • Ensure Health & Safety and Quality corrective actions are adequate and effective

Position Responsibilities - Cont.

  • Ensure that appropriate procedures, training, and equipment are provided to workers to allow them to perform their work in a manner that will minimize risk of injury or impact on their health and record the results
  • Adhere to applicable quality systems
  • Adhere to and promote the Employee Charter and work within the rules, regulations, and guidelines of the Magna Exteriors Employee Handbook
  • Conduct business in an ethical manner in compliance with the Magna Code of Conduct
  • Encourage and support the Open-Door Process and ensure all employees questions, suggestions and concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Participate in and support Continuous Improvement initiatives
  • Maintain work area in accordance with the principles of 5S and operate daily within these standards
  • Ensure work area is kept neat and organized
  • Perform other duties as required

  • Education - Minimum completion of post-Secondary education in a technical or scientific field

 

Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills –

  • A minimum of seven (7) years related experience in a laboratory/testing environment
  • Leadership experience preferred
  • Experience in the automotive industry an asset
  • Experience in planning and launching new laboratory facilities an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written
  • Able to write technical reports and provide updates to customers
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills along with a strong sense of time management and problem-solving abilities
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, maintaining a high level of accuracy while under pressure to achieve deadlines
  • Highly motivated, experienced in working with a high degree of confidentiality, discretion, and integrity in all aspects of the job
  • Customer-focused, team player with ability to interact effectively with all employee levels in positive, cooperative, and productive manner
  • Able to exercise initiative, common sense and maintain effective internal and external working relationships

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment - Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer, may require travel.
