Role Summary

Magna New Mobility in Troy, MI is seeking a talented, visionary and self-motivated Engineer to be a part and help to create the Magna New Mobility Group to create new mobility solutions through the use of advanced technologies.  The Lead Product Engineer position involves engineering, releasing, and evaluating new automotive and mobility products and technologies. Individual will be responsible to work within a multi-disciplined engineering team. Work closely with the internal groups, suppliers and other departments as necessary to ensure project completion and most importantly meet the program expectations. Recent experience in a full vehicle program involving integration and packaging is a plus.  This position will play a key part in the New Mobility Group and be a part of a tightly knit development team. This team works directly with the Executive Vice-President of Magna New Mobility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze data such as customer specifications and requirements to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Design products or systems such as body structures, closures and other automotive systems.
  • Work with CAD Designers to develop product designs.
  • Communicate design concept with Structural Engineers and evaluate results of analysis.
  • Ensure Bill of Material (BOM) is up to date and evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Perform failure mode effect analysis (DFMEA's), design for assembly (DFA), and manufacturing (DFM), geometric dimensioning & tolerance (GD&T) to component and systems.
  • Support the development of innovative components and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process including design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process.
  • Contribute to team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes.
  • Part proposal drawing: starting from rough design concepts up to detail/final drawings, responsible for all drawing information including: tolerance/fits, dimensional specifications and surface finishes
  • Analyze engineering results and propose product changes to determine feasibility, improvement of components and systems and functional/performance specifications
  • Maintain project schedule by monitoring project progress, co-coordinate activities, calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements and resolving problems to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Specify requests and coordinate all sub-contracted work (i.e. FEAs, Product Validation and Testing, Prototype parts manufacturing, CAD drawing file conversion) and assures timely completion.
  • Attend meetings with customers, with respect to design reviews.
  • Confer with other Project Engineers to clarify or resolve problems and develop designs
  • Provide engineering support to other departments within the company as directed by the department leader
  • Prepare project progress reports
  • Perform other duties as required

Key Qualifications/Requirements

 

Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • 12+ years of experience as a Product Engineer.
  • Experience with developing and releasing automotive products for prototype builds and serial production.
  • Experience working with suppliers in coordinating build activities.

 

Skills: 

  • Strong in fundamental engineering and analytical methods.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA)
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process and assembly methods
  • Knowledge of various materials used in automotive products
  • Understanding of design inputs and outputs for CAE, particularly FEA/CFD.  Modeling skills desired
  • CAD modeling skills and/or proficiency in model inspecting (CATIA, UG, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Technical ability and creativity to initiate, direct and control specific projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)

Additional Information

  • Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus
