Position Overview

  • Lead advanced strategy development for future technologies and products within the Corporate R&D group.
  • Lead the planning, Organization, Execution and Coordination of R&D programs (internal and/or external)
  • Lead the development of innovative components and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process including design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process.
  • Lead the R&D team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes.
  • Analyze engineering results and propose product changes to determine feasibility, improvement of components and systems and functional/performance specifications
  • Maintain project schedule by monitoring project progress, co-coordinate activities, calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements and resolving problems to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Specify requests and coordinate all sub-contracted work (i.e. FEAs, Product Validation and Testing, Prototype parts manufacturing, CAD drawing file conversion) and assures timely completion.
  • Attend meetings with customers, with respect to design reviews.
  • Confer with other project engineers to clarify or resolve problems and develop designs
  • Provide engineering support to other departments within the company as directed by the department leader
  • Support the Corporate R&D group with technical evaluation of technologies and products being considered by Magna, including but not limited to: technology deep dive, vehicle integration and application analysis, manufacturability, market and cost analysis.
  • Explore subject area of advanced automotive technologies, define scope, and develop novel methodologies, concepts and approaches.
     

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of methodology for advanced strategy development for future technologies and products based on trend analysis and business strategy
  • Develop an understanding of OEM differences and the impact of these differences on technology implementation
  • Support the ideation process and identify gaps in the existing products and technologies to guide advanced strategy targets that are critical to Magna 
  • Evaluation of technologies and product designs with compliance to scientific principles, engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements and related specifications
  • Conceive, plan, design and conduct research programs applying theory and principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, energy storage, electronics, heat transfer and materials. Guide programs and establish scientific and technical directions.
  • Serve as the technical lead in identifying concepts, principles, and processes for the assigned area of responsibility (i.e. subject matter, function, type of facility or equipment, or product) 
  • Analyze Engineering results and proposes product changes to determine feasibility, improvement of component and systems, and functional and performance specifications
  • Confer with other project engineers to clarify or resolve problems and develop designs
  • Correlate experimental data to simulation data
  • Use related computer software and equipment to perform technical analysis tasks
  • Maintain project schedules by monitoring project progress, co-coordinates activities, and calculating time requirements, sequencing project elements and resolving problems. Prepare and present project progress reports
  • Specify requests and coordinates all sub-contracted work (i.e. FEAs, Product Validation and Testing, Prototype parts manufacturing, CAD drawing file conversion) and assure timely completion
  • Support Testing & Validation activities by specifying test requirement & ensuring tests are completed to specification
  • Create and execute Test Matrix & P/DFMEA documents – performs analysis of result data to draw conclusions and recommendations
  • Interpret technical specifications from OEMS and other sources
  • Contribute to team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes and by sharing new information with others team members 
  • Support the development of innovative components and modules from the initial concept phase through the complete development process including design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process and business case.
  • Develop strategic relationships with key technical representatives at the OEMs 
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks
  • Present papers, participate in symposia and committees on behalf of the group 
  • Participate on advisory boards and serve as peer reviewer of technical programs. Networking nationally and internationally
  • Responsible for keeping the organization abreast of developments in his/her programs, new technical methods and developments affecting the group for the purpose of recommending changes warranted by such developments
  • Capable to demonstrate sustained innovation and creativity leading to significant project accomplishments without direct technical supervision. Supervision provided as required on assignments as well as on broader general objectives and limits
  • Influences in planning, organizing, and supervising of the work of external staff(s) of engineers, scientists and technicians 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years in a related area, or equivalent combination of education/experience. This level is not reached based on seniority and satisfactory performance alone. It is based on outstanding qualifications and the needs of the department. Able to act as an authority in her/his field

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Engineering or a “Hard” Science field (Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or Chemistry) with exceptional qualifications and experience in research or development (product, material or process)

Special Knowledge / Skills

  • Strong spoken and written English language skills. Additional languages skills desired
  • Ability to apply extensive and advanced principles, theories and concepts, and contribute to the development of solutions to complex problems that require innovation and ingenuity
  • Ability to recognize new science and technologies relevant within existing trends and business strategy and extend them into new applications
  • Technical ability and creativity to initiate, direct, and control specific projects
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA)
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Process, Assembly methods and materials used in automotive products
  • Understanding of ANSI, SAE, QS-9000 and other industry/customer related standards
     

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and use hands to finger, handle, and feel.   The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and have adequate mobility to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
