Mission of the Position

 

The Power Electronics Mechanical Design Engineer (inverters) will be a part of development projects for electric machines for electric vehicles (and hybrid vehicles) responsible for the detailed design mechanical packaging, tolerance analysis, configuration of components, cooling design etc. related to power electronics, specifically high-power traction inverters. The engineer will develop new or modify existing products for new customer and/or internal product developments, following the defined product concept for eDrive.

 

Multiple roles/levels available:


As an Intermediate level engineer, the engineer will work independently with limited supervision to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using knowledge and judgement to make adaptations and modifications.

 

As a Senior Engineer, the engineer will independently perform a wide variety of complex/advanced engineering work to include planning, designing, and carrying out work assignments, often serving as a technical authority of the department with little to no supervision.  The engineer will mentor and guide less experienced team members.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • General:
    •     Work in fast-paced environment to design and develop on vehicle high voltage power      electronics components.
    •     Support prototype builds by creating assembly instructions and production launch.
    •     Root cause analysis on failed units from testing or the field and driving towards resolution and corrective action.
    •     Provide technical mentorship and feedbacks to other members on the team.
  • Requirement Management:
    •     Read and interpreted the requirement document given by customer and convert it is design requirement.
    •     Work with System Architect Engineering team to define all technical requirements including Statement of Work (SOW) generation.
    •     Understand simulation requirements & identify simulations to be performed. 
  • Engineering Design:
    •     Generate Mechanical Packaging (Inverter) concept, from concept to production phase, based on customer requirements.
    •     Review design calculations / prepared some calculator templates
    •     Perform multi-physics finite element design of experiment involving thermal, mechanical structure and material domains. 
    •     Perform GD&T and tolerance stack ups.
    •     Work with Electrical Engineering team to define the PBCA outline size, board mount connectors, and signal connections.
    •     Design and package electronics, busbars, wiring harnesses, plastic injection molding parts, casting parts, and machined parts while complying to packaging constraints.
  • Process Maturity:
    •     Participate in concept selection, specification development, FMEA etc.
  • Customer & Supplier Communication:
    •     Participated in multiple Customer meetings supporting lead
    •     Handle supplier discussions for components with purchase team
    •     Perform DFM activities with suppliers.
    •     Track component validation plan and test status with suppliers, and internal Magna validation teams.

Requirements and Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years (intermediate) or 7+ years (senior) of professional work experience in automotive designing and developing of vehicle high voltage power electronics components.
  • Has good understanding of Electric Vehicle & inverter design
  • Knowledge or experience with sheet metal stamping, casting, and plastic injection molding processes.
  • Product Supply Chain Experience.
  • Concept Design
    •     Ability to read and interpret the requirement document given by customer and convert it into design requirements.
    •     Understand simulation requirements & identify simulations to be performed.
    •     Can generate concept based on customer requirements.
  • Engineering Design
    •     Knows detailed 3D modelling software & 2D drawing for multiple projects.
    •     Can handle complex drawings like Cast Housing, sheet metal & total assembly drawing with detailed GD&T application, tolerance Stake up, Review drawings.
    •     Experience in designing multiple components based on functionality in 2-3 projects
    •     Review design calculations / prepared some calculator templates.
    •     Has experience of finite element design of experiment involving thermal, mechanical structure and material domains.
  • Process Maturity
    •     Has previously worked creating the product from concept to mass production stage,  preferably  on vehicle product.
    •     Detailed understanding of processes used in product development & passed through at least one full cycle.
    •     Participated / lead in concept selection, specification development, FMEA etc.
    •     Detailed understanding of release process with release experience.
  • Customer & Supplier Communication
    •     Participated in multiple Customer meetings supporting/lead specific topics.
    •     Handle supplier discussions for simple components with purchase team.
    •     Good vocal / writing skills.
    •     Perform DFM activities with suppliers.
  • Interpersonal Skills
    •     Support prototype builds by creating assembly instructions and production launch.
    •     Root cause analysis on failed units from testing or the field and driving towards resolution and corrective action.
    •     Provide technical mentorship and feedbacks to other members on the team.

Work Environment

 

Office environment; 10% travel required. 


While working in this environment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes and various levels of temperature created by manufacturing processes.
