About the Role

The Cost Engineer is responsible for cost modeling and analysis of supplier cost breakdowns for Purchasing and Program Management, support to Sales for customer breakdowns, cost benchmarking, Program Management Serial Cost Down support, and alignment of cost engineering processes with Driveline Systems (DS) within Magna Powertrain (MPT).

 

This individual will work closely with Purchasing, Target Costing, Program Management,  Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, VAVE and Materials groups to provide inter-divisional support for the definition, attainment and control of the cost targets for purchased parts. Provides regular feedback to the Cost Engineering Manager Drivelines Systems North America.  

 

The Cost Engineer’s primary objectives are in accordance with the mission of the Driveline Systems North America Program Management Organization, where Program Management execution is to be viewed as a source of competitive advantage by all stakeholders including internal & external customers, employees & shareholders, which will ensure a long term sustainable advantage through rigorous, process-oriented execution and cross-functional leadership, and will deliver business results that meet or exceed Magna’s expectation for awarded programs.
 

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed cost models
    • Determine manufacturing processes, required labor, overhead and tooling requirements.
    • Prepare complete buildups on MPT “Standard Cost Breakdown” to manufacture a component to a supplied print/CAD
    • Prepare cost delta buildups for engineering changes and volume / lifetime variations
    • Prepare cost driver analyses and Develop and maintain product cost database 
  • Analyze Magna internal product cost and provide customer friendly cost break down forms
  • Analyze Supplier component quotes & cost breakdowns and provide data to Purchasing to negotiate with Suppliers
  • Streamline processes and build / maintain accessible library / database of all breakdowns
  • Alignment of cost engineering processes within MPT DS and support establishment of global best practice calculations
  • Support to Sales for customer breakdowns
  • Support cross functional program teams and cross functional cost down workshops
  • Prepare presentation material as required to support New Business activities
  • Supports and adheres to policies, procedures, and operational guidelines related to established quality management system (ISO/TS 16949), and has a passion for continuous improvement in these areas
  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Sales, Finance and various forms of management groups
  • Ability to interface with various customer to explain Magna cost positions
  • Assist in plant P&L cost exercises 
  • Assist in customer cost audits
  • Practice and maintain integrity while following Magna’s Charter and Constitution
  • Follow Magna’s Code of Conduct and Ethics and related compliance policies
  • Supports and adheres to policies, procedures, and operational guidelines related to established quality management system (IATF) 
  • Drive the development of new technologies to improve quality, efficiency and reduce cost
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures to ensure duties of self are performed in a safe manner
     

Who we are looking for

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required or equivalent (6 additional years of related technical experience in addition to experience referenced above). Technical / Engineering Degree is highly preferred
  • Must have good skill level / proficiency in Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, SharePoint, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and SAP applications, and be/become proficient in Magna & customer systems
  • Knowledgeable in the following products mechanical parts: transfer cases, axle drives, transmissions, mechatronics, flanges, shafts, housings, bearings, gears, seals, friction materials, plates
  • Knowledgeable in the following materials: aluminum, steel, cast iron, powder metal, plastics
  • Knowledgeable in the following processes: forging, casting, machining, gear cutting, stamping, molding
  • Knowledgeable in the following processes: final assembly, sub assembly
  • Knowledgeable in the following electrical parts / products: Actuators / Motors, ECUs, Switches, Sensors, Solenoids, Wiring Harness
  • Knowledgeable in the following hydraulic parts / products: Tubes, Hoses, Hydraulic Lines
  • Proficient ability to read component drawings, and strong familiarity with GD&T
  • Knowledgeable in financial cost and price calculations (P&L, machine cost rate calculation, interests, etc.)
  • Proficiency in cost modeling software tool (Siemens TcPCM)
  • Familiar with APQP Documentation & tools, particularly FMEA, Control Plan, Process Flow Chart
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
