Role Summary

 

About the Role: Tier One Auto Supplier is looking to hire an in-house Labor and Employment Counsel.  This position is accountable for dealing with a variety of employment and labor-related legal matters, including helping the Company comply with legal requirements, providing strategic legal advice on various business initiatives, managing litigation files and providing legal training to Divisions/Groups.  

 

Candidates should have seven to ten years of relevant experience in a law firm or in-house corporate environment, including practice before state and federal courts, the EEOC, the NLRB, state civil rights agencies, and an understanding of labor and employee benefits laws.

Key Responsibilities

 

Your Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day strategic legal and business advice on various management decisions and initiatives;
  • Advise in all areas of employment and labor law matters, including hiring practices, termination issues, discrimination and harassment, layoffs and plant closures, disability and accommodation issues, corporate compliance, interpreting and applying employment policies, workplace investigations, employee discipline issues, and negotiating and preparing employment contracts;
  • Represent the Company in both litigation and/or administrative proceedings before various courts and administrative agencies, including the EEOC and NLRB; 
  • Work closely with in-house and external legal counsel to manage wrongful dismissal, harassment/discrimination, and other employment-related claims in judicial proceedings;
  • Provide advice regarding compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements and Magna specific safety and environmental policies and practices;
  • Develop and provide training programs in all areas of employment and labor law to support Company Managers and Supervisors; 
  • Advise on matters relating to collective bargaining agreements and labor relations matters;
  • Act as a supporting member of the Company bargaining committee, including researching, costing proposals and preparing and/or reviewing drafts of collective agreements language; Ensure negotiations are properly documented;
  • Educate management on negotiated CBA changes and assist with implementation where required;
  • Coordinate the Company response to any union organizing activity;
  • Draft and review employment policies and Employee Handbooks; 
  • Develop, maintain and continuously improve the effectiveness of the departmental policies and procedures; 
  • Perform all job functions in a safe, healthful and environmentally conscious manner, abiding by all health, safety and environmental rules and regulations as outlined in the company handbook; 
  • Handle other duties, as assigned.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

 

Who we are looking for: 

  • Law degree with admittance to practice law in at least one state
  • 7 – 15+ years of work-related experience
  • Ability to travel overnight 10% - 25% of the time 

 

Your preferred qualifications:

  • Trial work, collective bargaining and managing a union relationship 
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in an effective and non-technical manner
  • Abiility to apply good business judgment
  • Ability to utlize strong analytical, research, drafting, negotiating and organizational skills is essential
