Role Summary

The Materials Technical Manager is responsible for providing expertise and leadership in materials related activities across Magna Exteriors. This includes material selection, plastic product design support, OEM specifications, obtaining technical data and issues management.  Needs to provide materials expertise to the product development groups, Magna research & development, purchasing, program teams and the Magna manufacturing divisions.  Maintain and cultivate relationships with material suppliers, OEM materials engineers and key sub-tier suppliers.  This responsibility involves work with polymers, foams, elastomers, composites, metals, adhesives and paint/coatings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Requires in-depth knowledge of materials used for exterior applications, the suppliers for each material type and basic cost-performance comparisons.

  • Needs to understand OEM specifications and approval processes for base materials and decorated substrates/resins.  Has to have or quickly develop a network of contacts at every OEM that Magna does significant business with.  Needs to be able to access OEM specs and lists containing the approved materials/suppliers.  Needs to have or quickly develop network with contacts at independent laboratories for outsourced testing.

  • Has to lead multi-functional teams in resolving materials related issues.  This includes basic warranty analysis to understand field issues for parts with elevated warranty levels.

  • Identification and project management of new material technologies that are being developed by the supply base.  Supports Magna R&D on internal material development activities to aid their progress and help bring the new technology to commercial programs.

  • Has to understand ASTM/ISO tests for polymers, advanced analytical tests for problem solving materials related issues and long term performance tests like fatigue, creep and RTI.

  • Needs at least a cursory understanding of the interaction between paint and adhesion promoters, paint and plasma/flame treated substrates, and adhesion promoter and untreated substrates.

  • Has to be able to support product engineers on plastic design basics, including ribs, bosses, snap-fits, living hinges, etc…

  • Requires cursory understanding of the injection molding process and how processing parameters and the molding equipment can affect the final properties of polymer.

  • Requires good understanding of resin compounding processes and principles.

  • Utilize expertise to find lower cost materials and/or technologies that can reduce the final piece price.  Has to work closely with purchasing to aid their efforts and provide a united front to our suppliers.

  • Represent Magna with materials related industry groups.  Attend technical conferences and industry events that pertain to automotive materials and related technologies

  • Job involves high degree of multi-tasking since employee will have to handle multiple projects and requests concurrently.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  • Requires strong communication skills to effectively disseminate materials expertise, lead multifunctional teams and convey technical information to engineers and non-technical people.
  • In addition to having strong technical skills, position requires good people skills since the employee will have to regularly interact with numerous groups within Magna Exteriors, the OEM, and sub-tier suppliers.

  • Education - Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills – 10+ years of experience in materials engineering and at least 5+ years of automotive specific experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment - Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer, may require travel.
