Role Summary

Magna Corporate R&D in Troy, MI is seeking a talented, visionary and self-motivated Technical Specialist – SW Architect -  to be a part of the Advanced Manufacturing / Robotics Group, which will create new automation solutions that improve overall system efficiencies, using advanced technologies (i4.0 & Adv. Mfg. building blocks).
The purpose of this group is to significantly increase Magna’s production efficiency and reliability by developing and deploying advanced manufacturing technologies into high volume automotive production. 

The ideal candidate will be working in a culture that fosters creativity and problem solving. This position will play a key part in the Advanced Manufacturing / Robotics Group and be a part of a tightly knit development team that creates, validates and implements advanced manufacturing solutions for the future.

Key Responsibilities

•    Create detailed architectural blueprints for the software development team based on high level requirements including representations for functions and user interfaces.
•    Develop product specifications (functional and non-functional requirements) and design documents.
•    Identify bottlenecks in use of system resources for an enterprise scale desktop application, identify bugs and devise counter solutions to remedy the issues.
•    Understand existing full system architecture and propose new ideas to measurably improve performance, scalability, reliability of the software.
•    Define KPIs and measuring systems for performance, quality, scalability, and reliability of the software. Regular presentation of these KPIs to management.
•    Interface with multiple stakeholders to understand system and/or subsystem requirements, functionality, domain, viable technology, and development activities for advanced robotic system development projects.
•    Continuous communication with the software development team to provide support and assistance to troubleshoot and resolve issues via design ideas or coding effort.
•    Ensure adherence to development schedules and timelines, and successful deployment of the software in production use.
•    Treat everyone with dignity, trust and respect. 
•    Perform any other assignments from time-to-time as management so directs.
•    Practice and maintain integrity while following Magna’s Charter and Constitution. 

Key Qualifications/Requirements

•    BS degree or higher in Computer Science or engineering.
•    At least 10 years of software developer and project management experience.
•    Proven experience in software architecture design for advanced manufacturing and industrial automation. For example, a simulation package for industrial processes, CAD/CAM etc.
•    Demonstrable contribution in open source projects, or personal non-confidential portfolio
•    Strong understanding of following systems and their interplay:
o    Industrial robots: ABB, Fanuc, Kuka, Motoman
o    3D sensors/scanners and point cloud processing
o    2D cameras and image processing
o    PLC, state machines
o    Fieldbus – EtherNet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT.
o    Machine learning libraries such as ML.NET
•    Experience in C# development, .NET framework, WPF and object-oriented programming.
•    Experience in C++ and python development.
•    Strong understanding of concurrency and thread optimization.
•    Strong understanding of relational databases and PostgreSQL.
•    Strong understanding of networking protocols.
•    Proficiency in code versioning tool: Git, e.g., GitLab.
•    Strong understanding of CI/CD.
•    Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
•    Ability to work on challenging assignments with aggressive schedules.
•    Strong spoken and written English language skills. Additional languages desirable (e.g., Italian)
•    Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
•    Proficient Computer knowledge and skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 

Additional Information

•    Responsible for working in compliance with the provisions of the Health and Safety Act as well as any rules or standards otherwise specified by OSHA or MIOSHA or any other government regulations. Expected to exercise caution in all work activities and report any unsafe conditions, injuries, or near misses to the appropriate supervisor.
•    Domestic and international travel will be required up to 20% of the time.
