Role Summary

Magna Corporate R&D in Troy, MI is seeking a talented, visionary, and self-motivated AI Research Technical Specialist to be a part of the Advanced Robotics Group, which will create new automation solutions that improve overall system efficiencies, using advanced technologies (i4.0 & Adv. Robotics building blocks).

The ideal candidate will be working in a culture that fosters creativity and problem solving. This position will play a key part in the Advanced Manufacturing / Robotics Group and be a part of a tightly knit development team that creates, validates and implements advanced manufacturing solutions for the future.
 

Key Responsibilities

•    Research and development in robotic manipulation, vision and tactile perception, dexterous manipulation, Industry 4.0 related topics by applying techniques from AI/ML.
•    Develop proof of concept and prototypes for technology demonstrations with detailed reports on performance, reliability, lessons learned, failure modes and countermeasures.
•    Develop product specifications (functional and non-functional requirements), design documents, and user interactions to industrialize the developed technology.
•    Understand existing full system architecture and propose new ideas to measurably improve performance, scalability, reliability of the software.
•    Interface with multiple stakeholders to understand system and/or subsystem requirements, functionality, domain, viable technology, and development activities for advanced robotic system development projects.
•    Develop and maintain relationships with external university and research institute partners to jointly conduct research and development to solve relevant problems.
•    Treat everyone with dignity, trust, and respect. 
•    Perform any other assignments from time-to-time as management so directs.
•    Practice and maintain integrity while following Magna’s Charter and Constitution. 
 

Key Qualifications/Requirements

•    PhD with focus on robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, or related topics.
•    At least 3 years of research experience in developing or applying AI/ML algorithms and methods to broad topics such as image and point cloud processing, pose estimations, segmentation, developing reinforcement learning policies for dexterous manipulation.
•    Experience in physics-based simulation platforms such as MuJoCo, PyBullet, Drake, etc.
•    Demonstrable research contributions in opensource projects, peer-reviewed publications, or personal non-confidential code portfolio showcasing knowledge of AI/ML tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, ML.NET)
•    Proficiency in ROS, C++ and python development.
•    Strong understanding of relational databases and PostgreSQL.
•    Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
•    Ability to work on challenging assignments with aggressive schedules.
•    Strong spoken and written English language skills.
•    Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
 

Additional Information

  • Responsible for working in compliance with the provisions of the Health and Safety Act as well as any rules or standards otherwise specified by OSHA or MIOSHA or any other government regulations. Expected to exercise caution in all work activities and report any unsafe conditions, injuries, or near misses to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Domestic and international travel will be required up to 20% of the time.
