Role Summary

In partnership with Department Managers and Shift Leaders/Supervisory personnel, responsible for coordinating and ensuring that all safety and environmental standards are maintained and in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations as well as company policies.  In partnership with department Managers and Shift Leaders/Supervisory personnel, ensure that all training requirements, including on the job training, are met.

Key Responsibilities

•    Ensure Division’s Safety, Health and Environmental policies/procedures are consistently applied in accordance with Corporate and Division SHE Policy, and Federal, State and Local regulations, including OSHA, EPA and IDNR
•    Ensure a safe work environment by coordinating all safety activities to reduce workplace accidents and protect associates
•    Plan and coordinate safety training for all associates
•    Coordinate and attend all meetings and activities of the HSE Committee and Management HSE Committee
•    Maintain effective internal and external communication
•    Follow the principles of the Employee's Charter
•    Support new program launches
•    Provide motivation and results-oriented environment
•    Provide counsel and support to associates and management on health, safety and environmental matters
•    Establish written safety standards and review/update annually
•    Evaluate safety and ergonomic issues in design and layout
•    Provide and maintain statistics for continuous improvement activities
•    Review all accident/incident investigations and provide leadership in developing and implementing corrective actions
•    Coordinate the selection of PPE and appropriate fit testing of such items
•    Conduct monthly safety and environmental audits and report results to division management
•    Ensure that the SHE Action Plans resulting from the Employee Opinion Survey are completed timely
•    Maintain a high profile with associates on the plant floor and be a strong advocate to ensure that associate safety and environmental concerns and issues are resolved in a timely manner
•    Monitor new and amended legislation and remain current with the latest health, safety and environmental requirements
•    Keep safety boards updated throughout facility and post minutes of Health, Safety and Environmental Committee meetings
•    Implement, maintain and report on status of the Environmental Management System per ISO-14001 requirements
•    Maintain statistical information on waste streams
•    Coordinate spill control team
•    Participate in monthly associate meetings
•    Report on status of departmental projects
•    Monitor Safety Date Sheets (SDS) and ensure they are updated
•    Investigate ways to reduce waste and environmental liability
•    Conduct sampling as required to comply with environmental regulations
•    Coordinate sampling, transportation and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams
•    Handle confidential information on a regular basis
•    Complete correspondence, forms and reports in Microsoft Office and other required programs
•    Ensure all employee documentation is maintained
•    Encourage safety and housekeeping practices and lead by example
•    Participate in Continual Improvement activities
•    Adhere to customer requirements, Business Operating System and company policies
•    Perform other duties as assigned

•    Able to demonstrate understanding of how job performance affects product quality and customer satisfaction
•    Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated leadership capabilities
•    Must be a team player and promote a team approach to problem solving
•    Highly self motivated and flexible
•    Must be capable of working under pressure and with short completion times on projects, and of working flexible hours in order to meet both internal and external customer requirements
•    Able to use computer and software as required
•    Able to maintain confidentiality and use discretion and tact

Additional Information

Education and Experience

•    A Bachelor of Science degree in safety engineering, ergonomics or a related discipline is preferred, or at least 7 years equivalent experience in an industrial environment
•    Five years experience in health, safety and environmental field, in a manufacturing environment
•    Minimum of 1 year in a training related position
